As with many long-lived shrubs, tree peonies can outgrow their allotted space and old wood may become leggy or unproductive. If this is the case, careful pruning can reduce the size and reinvigorate your plant. The best time to prune a tree peony is spring, before new growth starts, as this will stimulate the shrub to grow back strongly.

Something of a misnomer, the tree peony is a shrub, usually growing only 3 to 5 feet tall. Whichever type of peony bush best suits your garden, only minor pruning is necessary to keep the plant. Peony foliage needs to bask in full sun from spring until fall. Cut off that foliage beforehand and a bodacious bloomer becomes a flowerless flop.

Put away those pruners for. Peony plants rarely need dividing. If a clump becomes too large for a given space, or you wish to share some of the plant with a friend, fall is the ideal time for dividing. Cut back the foliage and carefully lift the entire plant out of the ground.

After loosening soil, lift the peony clump from the hole. Place it on a tarp. Gently shake the peony plant so soil falls away from roots. Using your hands, divide the peony roots into sections or divisions.
